Abstract
‘The accurate analysis of the lunar surface composition is critical for advancing our understanding of the Moon's geological history and potential resources. This study aims to achieve the depiction of the lunar surface composition by employing a systematic approach involving advanced pre-processing techniques and various linear spectral unmixing methods. To this purpose, we use hyperspectral data from the M3 sensor of the Chandrayaan-1 mission to the Moon. The study area is the western border of the Mare Tranquillitatis basin.
Initially, we preprocess the lunar spectral data using Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) and continuum removal to enhance the quality and interpretability of the data, respectively. Following pre-processing, we apply linear spectral unmixing (LSU) using five different methods: unconstrained LSU, non-negative LSU, sum-to-one LSU, fully constrained LSU, and LASSO-constrained LSU. Each method is evaluated for its efficacy in producing accurate abundance maps of the lunar surface components. To further refine the analysis, we construct different endmember lists using the RELAB spectral database, ensuring a comprehensive and precise identification of lunar materials. The results are compared with the lithological units presented in the existing geological map and previous studies in bibliography.’
